  • Search Engine Optimization Tips Part II

If you try to optimize a web page for too many keywords, you will fail. In fact, even two are too many. Optimize each page for one single keyword or phrase, and no more. However, optimization for keywords is only a small part of what you must do to achieve high search engine listings. It starts with the design of your site itself.

Every page on your web site contains the same elements on the page. First you have the title of the page. This must be the keyword that your page is being optimized for. This should be different for each page, and not the title of your web site that should be restricted to your home page. Each page title should be in bold characters and contained within H1 html tags. Any subtitles should also be in bold and contained within H2 tags. This indicates to Google, what the most important text on your page is, and if this corresponds with the search term used by a Google customer, you have a chance of a high listing.

Your content should be relevant to the keyword and not overused. Once in the title, once in the first 100 characters of the body text and once in the last paragraph is sufficient, unless your page is long in which case once more every 500 words is fine. However, Google does not like long pages, and much more than 800 – 1000 are pretty well redundant to the spiders.
